Improve your mood in moments – self care

If you have visited this blog before you probably would have come across the term “self care”. In fact, unless you have been living under a rock… the phrase “self care” would have crossed your path several times.

When I am having a stressful day, or going through some hard times there are some sure fire things I turn to which I know will perk me up, even a little..

Firstly… CHOCOLATE. For me, chocolate (accompanied with a cup of english tea) is an instant inner smile. My first choice is always a Cadburys one although I am partial to maltesers… mmmm. But more importantly than my pick of chocolate brand is the importance of this for me (yes, chocolate is important..) To me, chocolate is nostaligia, it is an unwritten rule that chocolate is a treat and when I do feel down I know a little treat is going to make that moment just that bit better.
*Important reminder* chocolate in moderation, please do not consume slabs of chocolate regularly 😉

Secondly, and probably my most go-to mood lifter is DISNEY. Disney makes me profoundly happy and it is always something I turn to when feeling blue. No matter who you are, whatever age you are, everyone has a favourite Disney movie and let’s face it, not much is better than cosying up on the sofa with a Disney classic (my favourite choice being Beauty & the Beast..)

When I am feeling stressed or a little down I love to reach for my favourite pamper products and candles. Lavender scents burning from candles and floral skin care products really help in unwinding and feeling calm and nurtured.. Right now my go to choices are my L’Occitane Neroli & Orchidee hand cream (smells like flower HEAVEN) and my Bath & Body Works Shea body cream.. Lighting my Lavender candle (PS never underestimate the calming power of Lavender) whilst treating my skin to a pamper is a direct route to calmness and peace when I am feeling not so calm and peaceful.

READING. Reading has helped me get through some pretty dark times. For me, it is a quick escape into another world to hide from my own when I am not feeling so great. There is something comforting and nostalgic about picking up a paper book, smelling the pages and losing yourself in a story, the Harry potter books being my most reached for in hard times. So if you are going through a tough time, then pick up a book, grab yourself a warm drink and get lost in another story for a while, you’ll feel better for it after, I promise chick.

My last top pick of mood enhancing activities is getting creative. I love to be creative, I love to have dreams and use creative methods to put them into place.. Whether it be jumping into creating a new blog post, planning photo shoots or even trawling through other creatives work for some positive inspiration I always feel a little better and a smidgen more focused when I have spent time doing what I love the most.

What do you do when you’re feeling a little rubbish? I think it’s important to talk about these things, especially as a blogger, life isn’t always as perfect as our online selves sometimes show, it has its ups and downs.. “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s learning to dance in the rain”

Yessss I’m a huge advocate for self-care. Why the heck shouldn’t we put ourselves first?! Chocolate, tea, some YouTube, my dog, a bath or cooking myself a nice dinner all contribute towards my self-care on my off days. Like today, I feel super ill and crappy so I’m planning to get all the “boring” stuff done quickly this morning then having a self-care day <3

Such a lovely post, the photography is so cosy too, I love it! Chocolate is a big weakness of mine, and i share your love for Maltesers! Now that it’s Easter time, the Malteser bunnies are around too which are even harder to resist! I’m such a big Disney fan too, and I find the Mulan soundtrack so uplifting! Thanks so much for sharing this post!

Some great points here. Chocolate always makes a situation better lavender scents are amazing at calming you, so totally agree with you there. In the past when I’ve had some right crappy days, I learnt that writing things down really helped. While it was waaay to personal to ever share with anyone other than myself, getting all my emotions and feelings down in words felt like a huge relief. I also find going for a peaceful walk helps to clear the mind.
